I have been using the Haygrazer Play bag from www.haygrazer.co.uk for a couple of months now and when it first arrived I was a little sceptical as to how it would work.
The holes around the bag appeared a bit small and the opening around the top a bit narrow. We use the large rectangular Heston bales at our yard and to get the hay into the opening at the top I had to break down the slices a considerable amount. I also had to keep packing the hay down in the bag every so often when filling to make sure there was enough in it, If I didn't do this I found there was often big empty spaces.
I soak my hay and this is where the bag became really handy. The bulk of the bag is made from a durable waterproof canvas and the bottom is a mesh material, so this means I can soak my hay thoroughly and the excess water will drain out of the bottom and then I can carry the bag on my back to the stable or trailer without getting absolutely soaked and covered in damp hay like I would with a conventional haynet.
I mentioned earlier that I thought the small windows in the bag would be a bit of an issue, however we often forget just how clever our horses can be sometimes and Pie rose to the challenge of spinning the bag around and carefully plucking hay from his window of choice. Not only did this keep him occupied but it also slowed down the speed at which he consumed the contents. As Pie has had issues with Gastric ulcers before, I'm always looking for ways to initiate a more trickle feed based system without having to feed him umpteen times a day.
Overall I am very pleased with the Haygrazer Play and although it may not be big enough to hold an entire nights worth of hay for a bigger horse it is certainly a product that I couldn't live without as part of my stable management regime.
